2018 Princecraft Vogue 29 XT
Boat Review by: Rick Layzell
When the pontoon segment exploded about a decade ago, most manufacturers were focused on building small, lightly powered boats in the 20 – 22’ range with 25 – 50 HP engines. Consumer demands for easy to use, guest friendly, versatile day boats have created an explosion in the pontoon segment and manufacturers have quickly and consistently upped their game. Each model year we are greeted with larger boats incorporating new and innovative features, crisp and sexy styling cues (on a pontoon design!) and lots more horse power on the transom. Princecraft has proudly been building boats in Canada since 1954 and they’ve made no apologies for pushing their designs with leading edge style, fantastic performance and loads of functional creature comforts. The Vogue 29 XT is the epitome of all of these commitments.
When we arrived at the test site the parking lot was about 300’ above the docks and when I gazed down to see a dozen or so boats waiting for us the one that stood out was the very sexy looking Vogue. She was dressed to the nines with a beautiful red fence design that flowed flawlessly along her 29’ length. The look of that Mercury 400 R screamed a desire to go out and play, cruise and enjoy.
The Vogue 29 XT is a big beast of a pontoon at 29’ 10” overall and she carries an 8’ 6” beam. What is immediately noticeable is her striking lines from the outside and the attention to detail as the lines outside carry through to her interior design. Clearly Princecraft left no stone unturned with this one.
Starting at the bow of the boat there are recessed LED docking lights and a very nice styling accent on the wide bow gate. Once inside the gate we are greeted by a pair of ultra-luxurious loungers topped with premium upholstered textured vinyl and tasteful stitching elements. Our test boat was fitted the removable bow gate seat for even more seating capacity. The entertainment table is in a black pearl wood grain and includes plenty of drink holders. Princecraft engineers developed a storage location for the table using space behind the passenger side lounge chairs that would have otherwise been wasted.
The raised fiberglass helm station tells an incredible story of attention to detail. Tastefully incorporated is a galley with a sink, faucet with electric pump and a portable water tank. The 200 Watt Kicker KMC 10 was backed by a monstrous sub-woofer and five 6 ½” speakers spread throughout the interior. The captain’s chair reclines, slides and swivels with ease. We also had the pleasure of testing Mercury’s Active Trim system which was optioned on this package.
The black painted wake board tower includes a custom, user friendly bimini incorporated into the design and multiple LED lights. The tower certainly adds beauty to the overall look of this package. There are lights everywhere – the dash rocker switches are lit, there is under console lighting, floor mood lighting and the speakers and cup holders also incorporate lighting.
With the Mercury 400 R on the back we handily jumped on plane in 4.2 seconds and moved quickly to a top speed of 47.1 MPH at 6,570 RPM. Cruising speeds of 18 & 25 MPH were both comfortable and there’s no question that with a seating capacity of 16 this package will perform regardless of the size of your party.
With big pontoon boats continuing to grow in popularity and endless consumer demands for additional creature comforts and options, Princecraft has crafted an incredible package that will meet the needs of many and bring smiles to countless boaters on the water.
